PHOENIX -- The Avnet Electronics Marketing operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT) has become the first distributor certified by Renesas Technology America, Inc. to program the company's security IC product, Board ID™. In order to obtain the certification, Avnet's programming centers had to meet the stringent programming, secure product handling, and key management procedures required for providing value-added support for this technology.
Renesas is a leading supplier of Board ID solutions, which enable machine-to-machine authentication to protect code and consumables, and authenticate access to the processor. Customers can now receive training directly from Avnet field application engineers (FAEs) that have been certified to deliver technical support for customers looking to adopt Renesas Board ID in order to protect their intellectual property against piracy and cloning.
"Intellectual property theft and lost consumable sales are a concern for many OEMs, particularly in today's economic climate," said Alex Iuorio, senior vice president of supplier management for Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas. "The Renesas Board ID portfolio provides the highest level of security among the various technologies, and Avnet is proud to have met the stringent requirements needed to deliver this technology to our mutual customers and help ensure their future success."
"Renesas Board ID security solutions have been very successful because they employ the same robust technology incorporated into - and thoroughly proven in - the smart cards popular around the globe for financial transactions and many other applications," said Jun Ueda, director, segment marketing, secure MCU, Renesas Technology America, Inc.
"To make it easier for customers to adopt and deploy our solutions, we are collaborating with our partner Avnet in order to make the requisite PKI key-management and injection service more readily available in an effective, affordable manner. This new certified security-oriented collaboration gives both our companies superb opportunities to better serve the large-scale initiatives now emerging in areas such as cyber security and smart grid, as well as security improvements for health care networks, medical devices, and automated services that use web-connected devices."
Bill Wentworth, senior vice president and general manager of Avnet Logistics, adds, "This is an example of our device programming technical leadership. Our engineering team, working closely with Renesas, developed the unique algorithms and key insertion programming necessary to perform this critically important security solution in a third party device programming environment. Avnet is the only company in the world able to provide this service. Our technical leadership, combined with our global scale and scope, enable us to provide state-of-the-art device programming and turnkey logistics solutions to customers anywhere in the world."
